A Little about Axum

Axum, a Cultural Gem

Nestled in the heart of Ethiopia, Axum holds a unique place in the country's rich heritage. As you venture through this town, you'll find yourself immersed in a world where fact and legend intertwine seamlessly.

Unveiling Axum's Ancient Secrets

Axum's historical significance is unrivaled, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts. As the legendary home of the Queen of Sheba and the Ark of the Covenant, this city proudly holds its place as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in northern Africa, dating back to 400 BCE.

A short trip north of the city reveals the mesmerizing Stelae field, where various monuments were meticulously carved and erected in the 4th century. The Obelisks of Axum, some over 1,700 years old and towering 24 meters high, stand as proud testaments to the past.

While time has taken its toll on Axum's tombs, one remarkable grave, The Tomb of the False Door, remains accessible to visitors. Its exploration offers a glimpse into the city's ancient burial traditions.

Don't miss the renowned Church of Saint Mary of Zion, revered as one of Ethiopia's holiest sites. Besides housing the Ark of the Covenant, this sacred church boasts a storied history spanning over 1,700 years. Prepare to be enthralled by its architectural beauty and spiritual significance.

Marvel at Ancient Stelae Field:

The Stelae field stands as the crown jewel of Axum's historical treasures. Here, majestic obelisks soar into the sky, leaving you awestruck.

These incredible structures, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, carry a fascinating history dating back to 400 BCE. Prepare to be captivated by their sheer grandeur.

Stelae of Axum

Dominating Axum's skyline, the Stelae of Axum symbolize a tumultuous past filled with war, power struggles, foreign occupation, and the resilient spirit of the Ethiopian people. These towering monuments have witnessed centuries of history and have recently been restored to their former glory.

The Monolith of Axum's Triumph

Once the heart of the Axumite empire, Axum proudly showcased a 160-tonne megalith encircled by smaller obelisks. Erected in the 4th century by King Ezana, this colossal monument stood for over a thousand years before falling victim to the ambitions of a foreign nation.

During the Italian occupation of Ethiopia in the 1930s, the Monolith of Axum was unjustly looted, dismantled, and transported to Rome.

For nearly 90 years, it remained an emblem of loss and cultural theft. However, in 2008, Ethiopia celebrated a triumph as the granite obelisk was finally repatriated, signaling the return of stolen sacred artifacts.

Today, the Monolith of Axum stands tall, overlooking the encircling smaller obelisks. Adorned with ornate false doors, intricate designs, and carved locks, this awe-inspiring structure reflects the exceptional craftsmanship and organizational capabilities of its time.

The Ark of the Covenant

The legendary Ark of the Covenant, known for its appearance in Steven Spielberg's iconic film, is shrouded in ancient mystery. Contrary to popular belief, it is not hidden away in secretive military bases or the depths of Vatican vaults.

With a history that predates biblical times, the Ark has been intertwined with popular culture for centuries. According to scripture, the Israelites revered the Ark for its otherworldly powers, capable of summoning the wrath of God and performing miraculous acts.

After being presumed lost in the flames when King Solomon's temple was destroyed in 586 BC, the Ark reemerged in a distant land. Ethiopia became its sanctuary, with Emperor Iysau building the Church of Mary of Zion in Axum to safeguard this powerful artifact.

To this day, the Ark of the Covenant remains under lock and key within the church. Dare to explore its final resting place, but remember the wise words of Indiana Jones: "Don't look at the box!
