The Monolith of Axum's Triumph

Once the heart of the Axumite empire, Axum proudly showcased a 160-tonne megalith encircled by smaller obelisks. Erected in the 4th century by King Ezana, this colossal monument stood for over a thousand years before falling victim to the ambitions of a foreign nation.

During the Italian occupation of Ethiopia in the 1930s, the Monolith of Axum was unjustly looted, dismantled, and transported to Rome.

For nearly 90 years, it remained an emblem of loss and cultural theft. However, in 2008, Ethiopia celebrated a triumph as the granite obelisk was finally repatriated, signaling the return of stolen sacred artifacts.

Today, the Monolith of Axum stands tall, overlooking the encircling smaller obelisks. Adorned with ornate false doors, intricate designs, and carved locks, this awe-inspiring structure reflects the exceptional craftsmanship and organizational capabilities of its time.

The Ark of the Covenant

After being presumed lost in the flames when King Solomon's temple was destroyed in 586 BC, the Ark reemerged in a distant land. Ethiopia became its sanctuary, with Emperor Iysau building the Church of Mary of Zion in Axum to safeguard this powerful artifact.
