DAY 8: FLY TO ADDIS & EXPLORE SIGHTSEEING
- This morning you fly back to Addis and transfer to your hotel. This afternoon, you will be taken to attend the celebration of Timket Eve. Timket, also known as Timkat, is the Ethiopian term for Epiphany, a significant holiday commemorating Christ's baptism in the River Jordan observed by Christians worldwide. However, Timket holds a special place of importance in Ethiopia, where it stands as the most vibrant and momentous event of the year. Commencing on Timket Eve, which falls on January 18, eleven days after Orthodox Christmas, this festival seamlessly blends religious solemnity with secular festivities, including revelry and matchmaking.
- According to the Ethiopian epic known as the Kebra Negast, the Ark of the Covenant was reputedly transported from Jerusalem to Ethiopia during the first millennium BC, ultimately becoming the most revered artifact within the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
- As the early afternoon descends upon Timket Eve, priests from various churches reverently carry silk-covered replicas of the Ark in a stately procession toward a nearby body of water. Accompanied by a multitude of church members and devotees numbering in the tens of thousands, the atmosphere resonates with chants, dances, drum beats, horn blasts, the rhythmic waving of prayer sticks, and the jingling of sistrums—a musical instrument reminiscent of ancient times. This spectacle evokes a scene reminiscent of the descriptions found in the Old Testament.
- As twilight yields to evening, the priests and devout followers engage in an all-night vigil around the Ark replicas until daybreak. Subsequently, throngs of people congregate around the water's edge. Upon the chief priest bestowing a sacred blessing upon the water, the celebration reaches its zenith. Many plunge into the water with great enthusiasm, while others eagerly await a joyous splash. Following the renewal of religious vows, some of the Ark replicas are triumphantly paraded back in a jubilant procession, mirroring the earlier festivities.
- Overnight in Addis Ababa
DAY 9: ATTEND TIMKET FESTIVAL & DEPART FROM ADDIS ABABA

This is followed by a beautiful chanting and a special prayer to bless spring water will be blessed by Archbishop and sprinkled over the crowd.
